Hermann Kümmerly Jr. – son of Hermann Kümmerly Sr, who took over and ran the Kümmerly+Frey map publishing company founded in 1852 together with his brother. Hermann Kümmerly Jr. should have carried on the tradition, but decided against it and led a secluded existence as a painter. He therefore did not fulfil his family's expectations and was regarded as a dutiful son and outsider. Even as a painter, he remained hidden from the public eye, which is reflected in the design concept:
The concept breaks with the usual artist biographies and sorts Kümmerly's works (inspired by Ferdinand Hodler, among others) not by year or painting phase, but by colour mood. The resulting chapters are marked with corresponding colours in the margins and thus incorporate the book as a three-dimensional object. The fact that Kümmerly liked to paint on the backs of his canvases is also picked up on by the colour markings outside the cover.
Unfortunately, funding for the project was cancelled, which is why only the visual concept and a dummy of the book exist.
