transition

This work was created as part of my minor in Visual Literacy at ZHdK. It approaches the washing process in a poetic way through photography: the transformation of materiality, the pulsating rhythm of the machine, the intermediate states of dirt and cleanliness that normally escape our gaze. The laundry room – rarely mentioned and hardly noticed – harbours a quiet, everyday wisdom that cannot be found elsewhere. It is not a place of glamour, a meeting place for social encounters, or a room that is furnished and proudly presented. And yet it is there: functional, inconspicuous – the silent backbone of life, as cyclical as life itself. Between the vibrations and the smell of soap, something symbolic takes place: a cleansing that goes beyond clothing. The laundry room knows the weight of the days – sweat, dirt, tomato sauce, tears – and accepts everything without judgement. Nothing is forgotten in it, but much is transformed. It is a space of transition.

The images were created using studio photography and scanners. The text was inspired by «seasight», a poem from Heike Fiedlers «Langues de meehr». Using the recorded rhythm of my washing machine, I have created an image narration, which was printed as a booklet and exhibited at the side of a textile exhibition.
